Throughout he has displayed outstanding initiative, skill and devotion to duty." Patten was a member of the 467 Squadron flying Lancaster PB806 aircraft. The operation to attack Dortmund-Ems canal at Ladbergen ended when the Lancaster was attacked by enermy aircraft. All the crew managed to escape the burning aircraft and parachute to safety. Two crew were captured and sent to POW camps, the rest, including Patten were missing believed killed.
